Project Overview

Volunteer Nepal Travel along with its volunteers is operating its teaching project in the enchanting and fabulous cities of Nepal i.e. Chitwan, Kathmandu & Pokhara. We work in collaboration with local educational sectors to offer our services to different schools where there is lack of good English teachers. Nepal is an underdeveloped country especially when it comes to literacy rate. In Nepal, a large portion of the population lives below the poverty line and unemployment is also common there because English always remained a prominent factor for them in getting good job, educational advancement and future success. The poor people cannot afford their children education so they send them to primary schools where standard of conversational English teaching is very poor. Facilities in the schools are not good enough, these are suffering from various problems such as; poor educational system, underfinanced and understaffed as no fund to hire expensive teachers. They can only afford such type of teachers who themselves don’t have full grasp of English. Learning good English is not only problem in primary schools but children getting education in private schools are also facing the same problem. English language is good in these private schools but English vocabulary is not so good, which makes these children unable to face the world with confidence. To overcome this problem and to introduce English teaching program in Nepal many local NGOs are taking steps in collaboration with international organizations like Global Volunteers solutions.

Our (VNT) main aim is to teach these disappointed children so that they can face any obstacle in their lives. But we need volunteers support. You can be very kind if you give your valuable time to these poor children who are always eager to learn English from international volunteers. So by joining our hand in this project, you can create a big example of humanity.

You’re Responsibilities as a Volunteer

The teaching profession is challenging, yet rewarding job. As a volunteer you can share your knowledge with the disadvantaged and poor people of Nepal. You can help them in learning English and thus increase the opportunity for them to stand by their own legs. We place our volunteer in public or private schools which are understaffed and are need of volunteers. The size of the class is usually around 20 to 35 students. You will teach English 2-3 hours a day from Sunday to Friday. In addition to English subject you can also teach these deprived children other subjects like math, health and IT etc depending upon your skills. Besides teaching you are also welcome to support these children with other extracurricular activities like helping them in sports, singing, dancing, playing music, fun games and taking them on educational tours (if offered by project). You can also participate in administrative tasks like fund raising etc. this is a fantastic opportunity for all volunteers to get to know more about the culture, heritage, lifestyle and food habits of Nepalese people.

PLEASE NOTE: The nature of job is very elastic. You don’t need to worry about and no need to be stressed. You can work just few days in a week. To be specific one has to work 5-6 days a week and 3-4 hours a day. Local teachers or principals will help you in providing the work schedule and all other activities you need in this project. Volunteers are also expected to make little interruption in the schedule due to traditional, cultural festivals, their exams and other similar situations. During these times you can go for short holidays.

Project Skills and Education Requirements:

This project does not require any training, qualification or prior experience. However, you should be 18 years or older to join the project. Volunteers are expected to have an open mind, flexible attitude, initiative, compassion, eagerness, love and care for children. Little knowledge of English grammar, fluency in English, motivation, plenty of enthusiasm and lot of patience is must.

Food and Accommodation

Volunteer Nepal Travel will arrange food and accommodation to its volunteer in a host family or hostel it is depending on the project type and location. The lifestyle of the Nepali is quite simple when compared to the lifestyle of the Western countries. Volunteer should not expect the luxurious accommodation. You will be provided same accommodation facilities prepared by family. The Nepali bathrooms have a sit on your heels toilet, a shower area and running cold water and in the bedroom, you may either sleep alone or with another volunteer on a woven mattress or an a hard mattress. If you stay in the hostfamily, you are supposed to do the household activities like cleaning the house, cooking food, taking care of children, taking care of elder people. According to the Nepali culture, Nepali people do not send the elderly people to old age homes like other countries do. It is against their culture.

During lunch and dinner the entire family sits together to have their meal and though you are a guest in their house you are considered as a part of their family which is a part of the lifestyle of Nepal. The food in Nepal has an appealing blend of strong and vibrant taste. You will be provided with three meals a day which includes white rice, noodle, drinks, salad, and vegetables, which is delicious. And if you want to have your own food, you are welcome to have it and you can get it from anywhere. There are many restaurants in Nepal that would suit your tastes and budget. Nepali food is much cheaper when compared to other places and your hometown. During your volunteer service you are supposed to live with your group of people or family, and share the same experience that they face. You will be given the local fare twice a day, but things that you can enjoy throughout the day and till your service is the love, kindness, hospitality and welcome of Nepali which is extraordinary!
